DF 87 – Biodiversity in LCA: how far have we come?

Zurich

We are currently within a sixth mass extinction of species, and it is widely recognized
that actions need to be taken to prevent further and halt ongoing biodiversity loss.
Life cycle assessment and input-output modelling can play a role in highlighting
important impacts along global supply chains and finding more biodiversity-friendly
pathways for future development. However, to achieve this, models are needed that
account for the numerous impacts, reflect the complexity of biodiversity and the
importance of global spatially disaggregated assessments. 14 years after the first
discussion forum on biodiversity, we take stock of the current state-of-the-art in
assessing biodiversity in LCA and discuss the way forward.
